Tenby and County Club - one of the country's oldest private members clubs - celebrates 125 years this year.
The club was built in 1877 and opened its doors in 1878 as an elite private members club. Smartly dressed waiters would attend to members while they relaxed, playing billiards and cards. At that time, membership was generally the gentry and businessmen of the local community. Today, however, the club is made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life.
Although billiards is still played, today you're more likely to see members playing snooker. The club boasts two snooker rooms, full of character and atmosphere, with two first class snooker tables.
The Tenby and County Club snooker team was established in 1981 and is still going strong 22 years later, playing in the county league. Present captain Glyn Davies said: "I am very privileged to be part of a team with such a fantastic history behind it." Present club steward, Malcolm John, was a member of the original team who won the Division Two title in the 1981/82 season. Since then, the team has won all there is to win in the Pembrokeshire League.
Tenby and County Club is also home to the well-known Tenby Male Voice Choir. They have based themselves here now for over 10 years, and over this period have become an integral part of the County Club set up.
The club also plays host to the Tenby Players. This well-known organisation has staged many successful stage plays locally and further afield.
The club recently elected a new committee. New chairman Mr. Viv John has emphasised that this is an exciting time for the club. "We are a relatively young committee, and we are all committed to the challenge of providing excellent service and a warm welcome to members and their guests."
Members and guests, while relaxing with a drink and good company, can enjoy fantastic views over Tenby Harbour and Carmarthen Bay. What better way to enjoy an afternoon or evening with friends?
