Sir,
I have just returned home after spending a month in Tenby. From your Friday, July 12, edition you have printed an Observer summer guide.
In it you have an article with the headline 'Tenby - the jewel in Pembrokeshire's crown'. While I agree that Tenby is a jewel, I must say that it is a tarnished one. This saddens me as I believe Tenby is one of the most picturesque seaside towns I have ever seen.
What a disappointment I had to discover such a beautiful coastline and harbour spoiled by a town so unkempt. Majority of seat benches in need of repair and too dirty to sit on. Garbage containers sparse and, when found, dirty and too disgusting to use; no wonder the town is strewn with litter.
Who is responsible for the upkeep of the town setting an example to visitors and residents alike to keep the 'jewel' polished?
I would find it very difficult to recommend a vacation in Tenby, especially to friends, under these conditions.
