Trefloyne was bathed in sunshine for finals weekend, September 27 and 28. The two singles cup finals were held on the Saturday, and the two pairs finals on the Sunday.

In the Laidler singles Barrie Turner took on dual finalist Gary Heesom. Barrie had the better front nine, reaching the turn two up. The standard of golf over the back nine, with Gary making a great comeback, is best illustrated by the fact that Barrie came home in 38 gross, and yet was holding on to win by the narrowest of margins, one up.

After losing such a close match is was a big "ask" for Gary to go out again, this time in the final of the Wesley House singles against scratch golfer Chris Thompson. Again Gary played well, a tidy short game keeping him in touch with Chris, despite the latter regularly driving the ball 300 yards. Chris probably thought he had shaken his challenger off when holing a 20 foot putt on the 16th for birdie two, but he watched in admiration as Gary holed his eighteen footer for a half. Chris finally closed his opponent out 2 and 1 to leave Gary, who had played really well all day, runner-up again.

Chris Thompson was back on the tee on Sunday morning, partnering Adam Thomas in the final of the Paddock Inn Pairs. They moved briskly into a three hole lead against their opponents, Mike Ansell and Ian Lawrence, past winners of the trophy.

A tremendous eagle three at the seventh by Ian reduced the deficit. Chris made birdies at 9 and 11 only for Ian to reply with birdie at 14, cutting the deficit to one hole. That was the nearest Ian and Mike got to the silverware as once again Chris birdied the 16th and he and Adam concluded the match on the 17th, the winning margin 3 and 1.

Sunday afternoon found Chris Thompson and Adam Thomas on the tee again, this time for the Bush House Pairs final in which their opponents were Mike Williams and Richard Preece. The latter turned one up thanks to some excellent long putting by Richard before birdies at the 10th and 11th took Adam and Chris into a one hole lead. Richard, who had made an awkward putt for a crucial half at the quarry, then made a fine up and down on the 14th to square the match. To conclude a real team effort partner Mike finished the match off in style, making net birdie to win the 15th, halving the 16th in par and winning the 17th with another net birdie, and the pair finished winners by 2 and 1.

Trefloyne Seniors hosted neighbours Tenby on Thursday, September 25. The visitors opened strongly, winning the top two games by huge margins. Captain Ivan Kirk and partner John James went down 6 and 5. Roger Cryer and John Bancroft came up against Newman Vincent and John Hancock, the latter putting on a superb display in completing the course in 74 gross, resulting in a 6 and 4 loss for the home pair.

The tide turned for Trefloyne with successive wins for John Smith and Brian Norman 2 and 1, Graham Wharton and John Rolfe 3 and 2, Roger Thompson and Peter Scourfield 5 and 4, Garfield Price and John Shaw 3 and 2, and George King and Dennis Busby 4 and 3. Brian Cowley and Graham Harrison then lost 2 down, before Bernard Bradley and Luke Laidler won 2 and 1. The final match, a singles, was halved. Result: Trefloyne Seniors 6.5 Tenby Seniors 3.5.

For those who have failed to secure an entry to the All Winners Championship, to be held this Sunday, consolation has arrived courtesy of Captain Ian Lawrence. The Lawrence Stableford Shield, to be played on the same day as the All Winners, is for those who do not qualify for the All Winners. There's still time to enter, the list is in the Pro's shop.

Another busy weekend, as the last monthly medal of the season will be held tomorrow (Saturday).
