It is hoped that there will be a large turnout of Trefloyne members in support of the 'A.J.O' Cup, to be played in memory of the late Arthur Ormond MBE, past president and past captain of Tenby Golf Club.
The competition, open to members of the Trefloyne and Tenby clubs, will comprise 36 holes of stableford, 18 to be played at Trefloyne on September 6, and 18 at Tenby on September 13. Trefloyne members should note that their cards on September 6 will also count for the monthly medal.
There will be prizes for each day and also overall, with presentations at Tenby on the evening of September 13. The entry sheet is in the Pro's shop and members are asked to book their tee times as early as possible.
Ian Lawrence and Liz Crockford recently travelled to Fairwood Airfield, the base of Wales Air Ambulance, to present the charity with a bumper cheque for £2,000, the proceeds of the Trefloyne Invitation Day, held at the golf course in May.
"Once again, we would like to thank all sponsors and participants for making the event such a huge financial success," said Ian and Liz, respectively, Men's and Ladies' captains at Trefloyne.
The Seniors took on The Reston Saturday, August 9, in an enthusiastic and keenly fought matchplay challenge. The Seniors had found the'youngsters' too strong on both the previous occasions and this time was no different, but to their credit, the old boys put in a much improved performance and were by no means disgraced by a final score of 7-4 to The Rest.
Seniors captain Ivan Kirk notched their first point with a win over opposite number Ian Lawrence. Chris Hicks beat Rob Evans, Bernard Bradley overcame Mio Mok and Graham Harrison won a close game against John Bancroft. Winners for The Rest were Brinley Hughes, Adam Thomas, Meurig Evans, Steve Wedlake, Phil Catlin, Gary Heesom and Chris Thompson, who respectively beat Chic Brown, Barry Turner, Roger Thompson, George King, Brian Cowley, Brian Norman and Mel Beeley, the latter doing pretty well to take the formidable Chris Thompson to the 16th.
Five days alter and the Seniors travelled to Haverfordwest, always formidable opponents. Ivan Kirk and Trevor Lewis won an exciting top game one up, but there then followed defeats for John Smith and Brian Norman, Walter Witts and John James, Brian Cowley and Chic Brown, Roger Cryer and Chris Hicks, and John Cliff and Pat Corcoran. Garfield Price and Graham Harrison pulled a point back for Trefloyne, winning 2 and 1, but Roger Thompson and Dennis Busby lost two down, and Mike Hale and Mel Beeley also lost.
Trefloyne took some comfort from a good win by Steve Wedlake and Bernard Bradley, and also from a tremendous effort from John Cook who won his match playing alone against the Haverfordwest pair.
Final score: Haverfordwest 7 Trefloyne 4.
Two pairs, Chris Thompson and Adam Thomas and Mike Ansell and Ian Lawrence are dominating the pairs cups.
They meet in one semi-final of the 'Bush House', while Mike Williams and Richard Preece will play Ivan Kirk and Barry Turner in the other.
In the 'Paddock Inn' semi-finals, John Shaw and Garfield Price take on Chris and Adam, while Ian and Mike are up against Barry Thorne and Paul Griffiths. It is good to see that the captain has found the time to play some decent golf during his busy year at the helm!
Chris Thompson and Dean Rawlins are now joint leaders in the Table of Merit with 34 points each. Meurig Evans is third with 28, and joint fourth, with 22 each, are Richard Davies and Phillip John.
