Trefloyne's Dyfed League team entertained St. David's on Saturday, July 26. After a surprisingly heavy 5 and 4 defeat for the home side's top pairing, Dean Rawlins and Rob Evans, Trefloyne were always struggling to take anything from the match.
Five of the remaining games went to the wire. Walter Witts and Adam Thomas contributed a half, and the two Rogers, Thompson and Cryer, won a close game one up. There were halves also for Barry Thorne and Steve Wedlake, and Meurig Evans and John Smith.
However, Mel Beeley and Mike Hale lost 2 and 1, having been three up, but fortunately Ivan Kirk and Graham Harrison won the last game one up to conclude an exciting match with the scores level at Trefloyne 3.5 St. David's 3.5.
Coincidently, Trefloyne Seniors had faced the same opposition two days earlier, although their fixture was at St. David's. This was another close encounter, but with each side short-handed there were only seven games. Maybe the wet conditions discouraged a few from turning out!
Just as in the league match two days later, most of the games were very close and yet again Ivan Kirk and Graham Harrison played well to win a crucial point, this time in the top game, 2 and 1. Roger Cryer and Bernard Bradley lost one down, Walter Witts and John James won two up, but with Garfield Price and John Shaw also winning, the score was a healthy 3-1 in the visitors' favour.
However, the steady rain was taking its toll on the later groups. Mike Hale and Mel Beeley lost three down and John Smith and Brian Norman lost 2 and 1. John Bonar and Trevor Lewis salvaged a hard earned half from the last game and the final score, just as it was to be two days later, was St. David's Seniors 3.5 Trefloyne Seniors 3.5.
Having lost heavily in the league match the previous day, Dean Rawlins stormed back with a fine win in the weekend stableford, played on Sunday, July 27. He scored 40 points, with Andrew Evans taking second spot with 38, thanks to a better back six than Gilroy Thomas, who finished with the same score. The winner had a two, and Brian Norman bagged a couple.
Congratulations to Sue and Dave Shooter, winners of the Alice Shapcott Mixed Pairs Matchplay. They beat Caroline Fletcher and Mike Allen in the final.
