A win at home against St. David's in the last Dyfed League Division Three fixture of the season on September 28, ensured Trefloyne a fourth place finish in the table.
"A very creditable performance considering it was the club's first season in the league," said team captain Roger Thompson. "The team, who throughout the season have included some strong players from the Junior Section, are looking forward with confidence to next year. With the benefit of the experience gained this time, we will hopefully be able to launch a serious challenge for promotion in 2003."
Against St. David's, the top pairing of Tom Hilling and Steve Wedlake went down 3 and 2, while Roger Thompson and Graham Harrison fared even worse, losing 5 and 4. The three winning pairs were Simon Hilling and Roger Cryer 4 and 3, Rob Evans and Ivan Kirk 3 and 1, and Brian Cowley and George King 5 and 3. Mike Ansell and Peter Edwards, the latter making a sterling debut, halved their game, as did John Smith and Pat Corcoran.
Result: Trefloyne 4 St. David's 3.
Trefloyne Seniors can rarely have played so well as in their match at home on September 26 to close rivals (but best friends) Tenby. Graham Wharton proved himself a supreme tactician by astutely changing the normal playing order and sending out many of his longest handicaps first, thus ensuring they were receiving plenty of shots from some very strong and capable Tenby players. This decision also had the added benefit of moving the captain out of the pressure zone, which improved his play immensely and he won his game, partnered by Mike Ansell, 4 and 3.
Trefloyne's early pairings all seemed to hit their best form simultaneously, with John Rolfe and Dave Jones leading the way with a 4 and 3 win, very satisfying for John who found himself playing against Malcolm Arlott, an old school friend from 45 years ago. George King and John Bancroft, four up after seven holes, resisted a strong comeback by the powerhouse pairing of Bob Parsons and John Hancock to win 3 and 1, and John Cliff and Dennis Busby won their game 2 and 1.
Although Tom Fletcher and Pat Corcoran lost 5 and 4, enabling Tenby to avoid a whitewash, there were wins for all the remaining Trefloyne pairs. Brian Cowley and Graham Harrison won one up, Trevor Lewis and Peter Scourfield 2 and 1, Brian Norman and John Smith 4 and 3, Ivan Kirk and Roger Cryer 2 up, and Neil Thomas and Roger Thompson 4 and 2.
The result was a 9-1 win for Trefloyne, a satisfying end to an enjoyable Seniors' season under Graham Wharton's captaincy. Overall the Seniors played 10 matches, winning six, losing three and halving one.
Meurig Evans won the stableford on Sunday, September 29, scoring 38 points, the same as runner-up Gilroy Thomas. Meurig took first place thanks to a better back six. Brian Norman was third with 36. Nobody scored a two.
Roger Cryer won a tight fought Tuesday stableford on October 1. He scored 34 points, Terry Whiston was second with 33 and Windsor Nicholas third with 32.
The stableford on Thursday, October 3, was won by John Bancroft, whose 39-point tally was four better than Terry Whiston and Roger Thompson, who tied second on 35.
The final round of the Junior Summer League was played on September 29. Tom Hilling returned the best card, 35 points, followed by Nathan Lewis 33 and Ashley Evans 32.
