An outstanding net 68 on the first day of the Trefloyne Challenge Cup put Billy Farrell well on the way to victory, and a sound net 73 on the Sunday consolidated a winning two round total of 141.
With Rob Evans and Chris Thompson, both net 73 for round one, failing to improve on the Sunday, it fell to Ian Lawrence to launch the strongest challenge to the overnight leader. The left-hander took the runner-up spot by adding a net 71 on the Sunday to a 75 on the Saturday, to finish two better than Rob Evans, third on countback ahead of Chris Thompson.
The result of the Trefloyne Challenge Cup (July 13/14, 36-hole medal) was as follows (top six): 1. Billy Farrell (gross 149, net 141); 2. Ian Lawrence (gross 172, net 146); 3. Trevor Lewis and Ian Lawrence recorded 2s.
Sixth place in the Challenge Cup helped Meurig Evans extend his lead in the Table of Merit, in which current scores are as follows: 1. M. Evans 45; 2. G. John 27; 3. C. Thompson 25; 4. M. Neale 16; equal 5. S. Wedlake and G. King 15.
Recent midweek stablefords have seen some impressive performances by Ivan Kirk, who won on both July 16 and 18. All in all a good month for Ivan, who won a box of nine balls for recording a two at the Milford Haven Seniors Open on July 11. Coincidently, this was the exact number of missiles lost in the same event by another Trefloyne participant, (now known as 'Johnny nine'). Paul Griffiths's win on July 9 was notable for him holing out for par when playing three off the tee on the 12th.
Midweek results: July 9 - 1. P. Griffiths 39; 2. P. Scourfield 38; 3. C. Thompson 34; July 11 - 1. T. Whiston 37; equal 2. M. Beeley and B. Turner 33; July 16 - 1. I. Kirk 37 (countback); 2. B. Thorne 37; 3. J. Bancroft 36; July 18 - 1. I. Kirk 37; equal 2. P. Griffiths and M. Evans 36.
The Juniors played round three of their summer league on July 14. Matthew McMann returned the best card 38 points, with Matthew Rees next best on 36. David Warren scored 35, Nathan Lewis 34 and Richard Thomas 33.
Congratulations to Chris Thompson on his selection for the Dyfed team. Chris, who has previously represented Dyfed at Junior level, will be the first Trefloyne golfer to play for the county. His debut will be at Carmarthen on August 4 against Brecon and Radnor and he takes with him the best wishes of all at Trefloyne.
