Once again the sun shone on the fairways at Trefloyne for the most prestigious event in the club calendar, the Trefloyne Charity Invitation Challenge, held on Friday, May 10.
As usual, the event attracted a wonderful turnout from local and visiting golfers, all keen to enjoy a good day's golf and support this year's charity, The Trust for Sick Children in Wales. Many local businesses had added generous support in sponsoring prizes and individual holes.
The golf of an exceptional standard, with Trefloyne members Chris Thompson and Michaela Edwards doing "the double" for the host club in winning the Invitation Challenge Cup and the Ladies Invitation Challenge Salver. They scored 39 and 34 stableford points respectively.
After the golf, a buffet was served in the marquee, kindly supplied for the weekend by course owners FH Gilman and Co. Captains Alan Brown and Liz Crockford extended thanks to all participants, and to the numerous and very generous sponsors, without whose support the event could not have taken place.
Alan thanked Peter Edwards and his team of greenkeepers for presenting the course in such pristine condition, competition director/club secretary Brian Cowley for managing the competition in his customary efficient manner, Liz Crockford and Dorritt Parry and their helpers for dealing with the buffet, Steve and Haulwen Laidler and the various committee members and others who had assisted throughout.
To conclude the formalities, Alan presented Ladies Captain Liz Crockford with a bouquet of flowers.

The second monthly medal of 2002 was played on Sunday, May 5, with Meurig Evans and George King taking the honours in their respective divisions.
However, whereas Meurig won the Tiger medal by three shots from namesake Rob, George won a much closer Rabbits medal by virtue of a superior back nine, the unlucky runner-up being Brian Norman. There were no 2s.
May medal results: Tigers (0-15 handicaps) 1. M. Evans, Net 75; 2. R. Evans, net 78. Rabbits (16-24 handicaps); 1. G. King, net 75; 2. B. Norman net 75.
His medal win resulted in Meurig Evans extending his lead at the top of the order of merit. He now has 24 points, with Mel Neale second with 16. Several others share third on 10 points each.
David Owen won first prize for perseverance as well as golf, in the Tuesday stableford on May 7. Several weaker souls packed their bags at the turn, after a soaking on the front nine. The winner scored 34, with Paul Griffiths second on 31 and the rest nowhere.
Meurig Evans put in another fine display on Thursday, May 9, winning with 40 points. Chris Thompson was second with 35 and Con Kearney third with 32.

Rachel wins at Trefloyne
Despite the rain, the juniors were raring to go last Saturday, with over 30 turning out to improve their swing.
After a quick practice session the children were put in teams and tried to become the champions of the long game. Their target was over the tubes and through the umbrellas.
All the groups played really well and showed off their talents to the awe struck adults! The eventual winners were Jack Hawkey David Webb, Mathew Smith, Dan Hawkey, Ollie Worley and Robyn Knibb. Both Jack and Matthew also produced the highest individual scores as well.
The next group started off with a warm up session then split into two groups, with chipping and shots to the green being the target. Sophie John was nearest the pin with her chipping and Matthew from South Wales chipped in! Oliver Goldwait, returned after his rugby season and produced some excellent shots, and his team were the overall winners of the target golf, with Lewis Hurlow, Owen and Thomas Headland all doing really well.
Next Saturday is back to normal, depending on the weather! The groups will be working on some of their golf foundation targets.
Sunday was Trefloyne open. Congratulations to Rachel Scourfield who won the girls stableford, a well deserved victory and I'm sure she is really pleased with herself. Holly Watkins came second and had the longest drive. Dan Cope had the second best nett and won a jumper and a trophy.
Some of the juniors went out in Tenby and enjoyed the sunshine, their results and rounds can be read about next week.
