The annual Trefloyne v Lydstep challenge match took place on Saturday, June 30, with the Lydstep Society, and most of whom are members at Trefloyne, determined to gain revenge for last year's defeat. Tee-off coincided nicely with the Lions first test kick-off, but, such was the importance of the golfing occasion, that even Lydstep's Bobby Windsor, guesting for Trefloyne this year, preferred the fairways to the telly.
First up for Trefloyne were Carl French and Chic Brown, paired against uncle and nephew from the Duckett family. A 3 and 1 win put Lydstep in front. The second match saw Barry Turner and Mike Ansell stroll in 7 and 5 for Trefloyne. All square. Eddie Hoolaghan and Trevor Lewis then put Lydstep back in front, beating Rob Evans and Phil Catlin one up.
The next two games featured a couple of Trefloyne Juniors in family pairings, and the boys made a decisive impact. Luke Laidler bailed out father Steve, to enable the Laidlers to win one up, whilst Nathan Lewis gelled superbly with Terry Morris to win 2 and 1. Trefloyne now one up in the match.
Tom Pollock and Steve Wedlake then hit back strongly for Lydstep, beating Trefloyne captain Roger Thompson, paired with George King, 5 and 4. Match now level. It was fitting, therefore, that Bobby Windsor and Ron Webber, playing for Trefloyne to even up the numbers, should halve their game with Allan Jones and Gary Haigh.
A fine contest thus finished all square, with Trefloyne, as holders, retaining the cup, which was later presented to Roger Thompson by Trefloyne professional Steve Laidler.
After the match the teams adjourned a couple of miles to the 19th hole, at Lydstep. Bobby Windsor and Tom Pollock extended a warm welcome to Trefloyne on behalf of the Lydstep Society and Roger Thompson thanked the hosts for entertaining Trefloyne with a lovely meal and refreshments.
There was a large turnout in breezy conditions for a competitive Seniors' stableford on June 28. Nobody bettered the course, and Mike Ansell won narrowly with 35 points, from Bob Burks, 34, and Graham Wharton, 33.
Commiserations, and best wishes for a swift recovery, to Trefloyne secretary Brian Cowley, suffering from shingles at the height of the golfing season.
Brian, who also runs the competitions, has just published his first 'Table of Merit' for the current season. Those finishing in the top seven in each of 10 qualifying events over the season score points from 10 (for the winner of each event) down to one (for the seventh).
The first three qualifying events (May and June medals, and the Kitson European) have now been completed and the early Merit leader is Roger Cryer with 11 points. Joint second are Bobby Windsor and Mel Neale with 10 points each, and joint fourth, with seven points each, are Phil Catlin, Allan Jones and Ian Lawrence.
The Juniors held a flag competition on Sunday, July 1. As usual this was in two divisions, with the 0-28 handicappers led home by James Maxwell, who played really well to plant his flag halfway up the second. Luke Laidler was runner-up, holing out on the first, second time around, and Daniel Brace was third, 150 yards up the first fairway. In the over 29 division, Richard Thomas holed out at the first to win, but only just, as David Warren placed his flag just six inches from the hole. Third was Ben Edwards, 150 yards up the first.
Tomorrow (Saturday) is the July monthly medal. The following weekend (July 14/15) is the occasion of the two day Trefloyne Challenge Cup, a 36-hole medal competition.
