The main attraction at Trefloyne last weekend was the annual Seniors versus The Rest match. Last year the contest, run as a stableford, was won by the Seniors, but on this occasion The Rest, skippered by an enthusiastic Mike Ansell, were obviously suited by this year's format, singles matchplay, as they fairly romped to an 8-2 victory, ample revenge for last year's beating.
Everyone was delighted to see the return of Mel Beeley, dragged from his sickbed to add moral fibre to the Seniors' line-up, and the old timer duly obliged by beating Phil Catlin 4 and 3. That was the only full point won by the Seniors, although Tom Pollock earned a half against Dave McMann, and Pat Corcoran halved an exciting match with Luke Laidler, who was making his debut for The Rest.
The remaining games all fell to The Rest. Mike Ansell played Seniors' captain Chic Brown in a game that ebbed and flowed, with Ansell rallying well to win the last two holes to take a fine match one up. There was a good comeback from John Bancroft, three down after six, but winning 3 and 2 against Brian Cowley.
In two pairings of big hitters, Rob Evans had a 2 and 1 success against Bill Pearce, and Carl French a 5 and 4 win against Bob Burks. Neil Thomas beat his Lydstep colleague Bobby Windsor 6 and 5, and another Lydstep man, Allan Jones, won 4 and 3 against George King.
Finally, Adam Thomas, another making his first appearance for The Rest, saw off the in-form Peter Scourfield by 3 and 1.
Final result: Seniors 2 The Rest 8.
Welcome visitors to Trefloyne on Thursday, June 7, were the Seniors team from St. David's GC. Sadly they were a little short on numbers, but soon recruited some extras from the Trefloyne camp, enough anyway to enable seven pairs to contest an enjoyable match.
Chic Brown and Roger Thompson won the lead match 3 and 2, and Roger Cryer and David Owen added a second point for the home side with a 5 and 4 victory. Graham Wharton and Stewart Howe met a pair in fine form and went down 6 and 5. George King and John Bancroft halved their match.
Those were the only four games involving home bred St. David's opponents, and left Trefloyne with a narrow 2.5-1.5 lead. Too narrow it transpired as, ironically, the other three matches were all sportingly won by Trefloyne members playing for St. David's, resulting in a 4.5-2.5 victory for the visitors!
A splendid afternoon's golf was concluded with an excellent meal at the Crown Inn, Penally, after which St. David's acting captain Jerry Clarke was at great pains to thank Chic Brown and the Trefloyne Seniors for helping his team out by supplying a few extras. Both teams now look forward to return at St. David's in July.
The Seniors' next fixture is away to South Pembs. Golf Club on Thursday, June 21.
