Whitland 14 pts. Merthyr 8
Whitland gained revenge for their early season loss at Merthyr by beating the visitors by 14 points to eight at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn on Saturday. The victory should have been a lot more comfortable for the Borderers, but some poor handling saw numerous try-scoring passes going to ground. Whitland scored their opening try after nine minutes when, after good work by the forwards and backs in sucking in the defence, Colin Jones touched down. This went unconverted. Three minutes before the break, Merthyr levelled the score when winger Gethin Thomas touched down for an unconverted try, to leave the half-time score five-all. Whitland extended their lead in the second half with two penalties by outside-half Aled Davies, before replacement outside-half for Merthyr, Richard Langmead, cut the deficit with a penalty of his own. Aled Davies, however, again stretched the advantage to six points with a drop goal after 32 minutes, and that was how it remained at the final whistle. Man-of-the-match, centre Lee Glanville, was in outstanding form and two of his breaks in the second half should have led to Whitland tries, but unfortunately, some poor handling by his team- mates let him down. As ever, Phil Morgan was inspiring up front, with good work also by half-backs Andrew Jenkins and Aled Davies, and hooker Aled Harris getting back to his best. The match referee was Mr. Steven Edwards, of Ammanford. Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Whitland travel to face Penclawdd in the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup, with a 2.30 pm kick-off. Aberystwyth Youth 10 pts. Whitland Youth 13
Whitland Youth overturned a seven points to three deficit in the first half to run out victorious by two tries to one and by 13 points to 10. It was a match where Whitland overcame a much larger pack, and all credit must go to the boys for the way in which they battled back for a hard fought away victory. Aberystwyth's try scorer was Auros Jones, with Sion Blackwood adding the conversion, while Whitland 's only points in the first half came from fullback Daniel Newton, who slotted over a penalty. In the second half, Blackwood added a penalty for Aberystwyth, but Whitland's winger Shane Webster touched down for a brace of tries to seal a fine victory for his side. Tomorrow sees the Youth travel to play Haverfordwest, with a 2.30 pm kick-off.
