PART one of the Quiksilver Welsh National Surf contest took place recently at Freshwater West, with the Under 18 categories raising the performance level of Welsh surfing through the roof and a local Tenby surfer gaining recognition.
Fifteen-year-old Kirk Lester, of Upper Hill Park, came third in the Under 18 Longboard event and was also handed the Paul Ryder trophy for 'most up and coming surfer (Pembrokeshire) award' at the contest which took place over the last Bank Holiday weekend.
Kirk, who borrowed his father's board to compete in the competition, belongs to the Pembs. Surf Ryder Club.
Part two of the Quiksilver Welsh Nationals will now run on June 5/6, with the location yet to be decided.
