Popular Lillian Lowe, of Tenby, is well-known for being one of South Pembrokeshire's oldest residents.

But now the 103-year-old is gaining nationwide fame as possibly the world's most senior social networker.

For news that she has just signed up to Facebook to keep up with news from her seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren has gained great media interest across the country.

And with her 104th birthday only two months away, it's thought that young-at-heart Lillian may be the oldest Facebooker amongst its 500-million users across the globe.

"It's a wonderful way of finding out about things," said Lillian, "but I must say it's a dreadful time waster!"

The retired hotelier and businesswoman surfs the net on an iPad, scrolling through over 30 Facebook 'friends' and particularly enjoying re-living foreign travels through Google Earth.

"When I was 84, I visited Australia with my young sister Mary, who will be 100 next year," said Lillian. "We had a lovely trip, so yesterday I took myself off to have a look at the Swan River.

"I've always read a lot during my life, and this computer has just taken the place of a book."

Lillian - who can recall the news of the sinking of the Titanic and was already at school when the First World War was declared - was at least 12 years old before her family even had a radio.

"I think virtually everything has been invented during my time," continued Lillian, who is known to her family as Super Gran and to her little great-great-granddaughter Jessica as Super Duper Gran!

Now Lillian is getting used to her new title as Superhighway Gran after being launched into the world of the internet by grandson Steve Lowe, Tenby's RNLI mechanic.

Steve set Lillian up with her Facebook account and pops in regularly to lend her his iPad. With its touch screen, she finds it easier to handle than a laptop computer, and is now dropping hints for one of her own.

"Now and again, she might raise an eyebrow at a few of the teenage antics she sees on Facebook, but she's pretty broad-shouldered and takes it all in her stride," said Steve.

"What's great about Gran is that she's not afraid to take things on and is always willing to learn - she's a great inspiration to us all."
