Nothing was going to put a damper on Saturday, July 28. After a week of rain, the sun broke through and 180 young footballers and their families met at the Bush Camp Playing Fields to take part in the Pennar Robins Football Club annual junior tournament. There had been one last minute hitch when a sponsor for the trophies could not be found, but Dragon LNG Ltd., based at Waterston, came to the rescue and helped hundreds of youngsters and their families from all over Pembrokeshire enjoy this day to the full. Mike Brace, of Pennar Robins Football Club, said that it was, once again, a great day out for all the local teams (they seem to be blessed when it comes to weather) and Pennar Robins FC were very appreciative of Dragon LNG's support. With two tournaments, under 9s and under 10s, attracting children from Tenby, Lamphey, Camrose, Clarbeston Road, Kilgetty, St. Clears and Fishguard, it was a very busy day for all concerned. There was some excellent football played, very competitively, but in a sporting spirit, by all the children involved in both tournaments. Cheered on by families and friends relaxing in the sunshine, the finalists played superbly, but unfortunately at the end of the stages, there could only be eight teams involved in the finals. In the Under 9s semi-finals, Kilgetty were edged out by Fishguard by a single goal, while Tenby beat St. Clears. The final proved to be a bit one sided, the scoreline being 4-1 to Tenby, but all credit to Fishguard - they never gave up and battled bravely to the end. Meanwhile, in the Under 10s, and in a repeat of the Under 9s, the same clubs occupied the first semi- final with Tenby meeting St. Clears once more. Tenby were once again the victors by a goal to nil, while in the other semi-final Lamphey drew with Clarbeston Road, with the latter only being knocked out of the final spot via penalties. Both defences were dominant in the final and after extra time, no team had scored a goal, but Lamphey once again proved to be the king of the spot kicks and won on penalties. Congratulations to the tournament winners - Tenby in the Under 9s and Lamphey in the Under 10s - and very well done to all the teams who took part.
