School's out and so are the juniors! Out in big numbers! Down on the practice ground and out on the course. The first event of the holidays was for the girls, with the lady captain inviting them all to play on her day. It was also a chance for the girls to compete in the Mary Rowell Trophy. Three girls competed in this, with Nerys retaining the trophy for the second year; with the same points, but beaten on the back nine, was Holly Watkins, who was presented with the Margaret Williams salver. Ten other girls played a competition later in the day over nine and six holes. The girls played extremely well in the intense heat and played some beautiful golf.
The winners over the nine holes were Anne-Marie Dassen, Jessica Wellum, Lauren Keating and Megan Macro. The winners over six holes were Shelby Rossiter, Emma Guerreriro and Georgia Thomas.
Other prize winners included Bethany Duckworth, Katy Rees and Bethan Osborne, who was playing in her first ever competition. Rachel Scourfield was the winner of the putting competition and she was also presented with a voucher for winning the silver salver presented to her last year.
An excellent day was had by all the girls who would like to thank Mary Rowell for the prizes and the captain for their tea. Thanks also to Heather, Holly, Stephanie and Mary for walking round with them.
Friday, Nic Thomas, Dan Cope, Brett Davies and Holly Watkins travelled to Aberdare to play in a Weetabix competition. Holly came second, with Nic fourth in his category and Dan 10th. Brett couldn't quite get to grips with his game!
Sunday's competition was the Russel Jones Cup, the winner with the best gross being David Schooling. His card has gone in the box and I'm sure he'll soon be playing off the whites! Congratulations on an excellent card.
The winner off the black boxes was Katy Rees and very close behind was David Webb. He had the best score I've ever seen for a first time out on the course, so well done David!
This was also the first time out for Toby Rossiter, Elliot Scotcher, Sam Turton and Sam Baxter, who all produced some excellent scores and will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Sunday was also the start of the Welsh Girls Championship, with Holly, Rachel and Nerys all competing. The first day was a practice day, with Monday being a cup day followed by a foursomes. Holly won the afternoon competition with her partner Sarah.
Tuesday was the big day, a medal round for those 18 and under to compete for the next round. Holly played some lovely golf, but didn't quite make the cut. It was a pleasure to watch such talented golfers at such a young age.
Rachel was doing well when I last saw her on the 14th. She had some excellent shots tee to green, but the greens were not like Tenby and that ball just didn't want to drop! I'm sure she continued to do well for the rest of the round. Find out more next week in the report!
Tuesday night was the Adams Shield in South Pembs. A strong team from Tenby travelled with Ian and Julian to compete against some of the other local clubs.
Tenby had the lowest handicaps, but this proved not to be too much of an advantage. Dan Cope was the leading Tenby boy and Michael Schooling, David Ayers, Richard Morton, Glenn Hoyland and Nic Thomas led the team into third place.
This Sunday a number of juniors are off to Aberystwyth to play in an Order of Merit competition.
Good luck to you all, I hope you enjoy the course.
For those of you still in Tenby, there is a junior tee time booked. The competition is Sunny Sunday, with hidden holes! Those of you off the blacks, it is an ideal time to go out as those big boys and girls are not around to win! Sign up on the board or just turn up! Pay your entry fee and put your cards in the box. Good luck!
