Once again it was smiles all round for the two local Tenderfoot Teams who competed in this year's Welsh Disabled Sports Team Championship, sponsored by Rotary International and held at the Newport Leisure Centre last Sunday. The teams attained creditable second and fourth places, with the second team missing out on third position by only one point. Team captain for the main Tenderfoot Team, Brian Quinlan, of Saundersfoot, set the standards for the day, attaining second place in the weight-lifting, with fellow competitors Darren Briggs (Milford Haven) and Simon Woolley (Kilgetty). However, three of the nine main trophies were won by the teams, the table tennis and shot putt by Tim Heaps (Lampeter Velfrey) and Matthew Vidler (Pembroke), while the skittles team of Jonathan Hubbard and Angie Richards (Broad Haven) came first in their competitions, with Martin Mathews (Neyland) reaching the semi-final of the darts. Other notable achievements came from the second team captain, Precilla Williams (Saundersfoot), Richard Young (Penally), Rhys Eynon (Llandissilio), Ian Collins (Milford Haven) and Martin Goodall (Haverfordwest) in the swimming; James Dash (Spittal) and Lynsey McCarthy (Milford Haven), of the second team, reaching the quarter-final of table tennis; Dennis Woolley (Kilgetty) in the pool competition; and the boccia team of John Richards (Broad Haven), Kimberley Woolley (Kilgetty) and Francis Corbett (Narberth). The Tenderfoot Team was formed in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Saundersfoot and Tenby, who undertook the training for this year's competition, with large numbers from the Saundersfoot Club travelling to Newport to support their sponsored teams. Both Rotary Clubs can be justifiably proud of the fact that they are the only clubs in Wales to undertake training for the disabled. Team managers, Rotarians Charles Hopkinson and Brian Waters, of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot, were extremely pleased with the dedication shown by all team members and congratulated them on their deserved placings, particularly as the event attracted over 20 team entries from all over Wales. Tenderfoot will recommence training at the Tenby Leisure Centre in September of next year when it is hoped a further team may be created.
