The Ladies and Juniors National Autograss Finals, held recently at Stroud, proved to be another good event for members of the Pembroke Haven and District (PHD) Autograss Club. Racing in Ladies Class 2, Sharon Powell (Pembroke Dock) drove superbly all weekend in her Vauxhall Nova to pick up an impressive third place trophy in the final, and in Ladies Class 1, newly married Helen James (nee Thomas) from Freystrop brought her Mini home for a fine fourth place trophy in a very competitive entry of 57 cars in the class. There were also fine performances from local competitors Jessica Murdoch (Milford Haven) Class 1 finalist; Heifena James (St. Clears) Class 7 finalist; Daphne Mousley (St. Clears) and Marie Mason (Narberth) Class 1 semi-finalists; and Donna Forrest (Neyland) who got to the Class 2 final run off. The future of PHD Autograss was also proved to be in good hands with six local juniors competing well in the Junior Championship (12 to 16 years old) among the record 137 entries. They were: Mathew Sawyer, Rachel Dewhurst, and Matthew Dewhurst (all Pembroke Dock); Samantha Murdoch and Jake Payne (Milford Haven); and Luke Jenkins (Fishguard). With all the results calculated from the championship, members of the PHD club were delighted to find that the South Wales League (PHD, Carmarthen, Teifi and Swansea) had won the prestigious trophy for the champion league in this year's championships, repeating the feat achieved by the men in their national finals last month. The last South Wales League race meeting of the season takes place on Sunday, October 3 (11.30 am start) with a 'dash for cash' event expected to attract a large entry to the Castle Lloyd Circuit, near Red Roses.
