A Pembrokeshire primary school is offering students a one year BA degree course! But the degree course on offer at Monkton Priory Community Primary School is not aimed at its younger pupils - it's targeted at their parents and teaching assistants instead. Run by the University of Wales Trinity St. Davids, the full BA degree course in education and social inclusion follows on from the three-year foundation degree course, which is already offered at the school near Pembroke. The course has over 70 students on its roll with many of its third year students due to graduate this summer already choosing to continue their studies and complete the new BA degree that starts in September. Shelley Morris, headteacher at Monkton School, said it was a privilege to be able to offer the degree course and the three foundation courses in school. "Our students all share a drive and determination to further their education and the school is delighted to be part of their learning journey," she said. She added that the unique community degree was largely due to the hard work and effort of Trinity St. Davids lead tutor Jean Williams and a former Springboard advisor at Monkton School, Claire Arnold. The existing foundation degree in inclusive studies for teaching assistants is a three year part-time degree covering modules in topics such as dyslexia, children's mental health, developing key skills and an introduction to social inclusion. Many modules are linked to work related studies and there are opportunities to further develop good practice in the work place. The project is part-funded by the schools deprivation grant and part-funded by Communities First.
