Students from Pembrokeshire College have been taking part in the new Global Connections Volunteer Award Scheme. As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate, students were required to undertake voluntary activity working with the local community. AS/A Level, ND construction and international students committed some voluntary time to undertake Global Connections' Reuse Challenge, incorporating several units of the award scheme. Initially they learned about how the practice of reuse in some parts of the world comes about through absolute necessity due to poverty and lack of resources. They carried out two beach cleans at Freshwater West with the help of Mari Williams, clean coasts project officer for 'Keep Wales Tidy', while also on a mission to find waste material to reuse and make into something useful. Over subsequent weeks, they constructed driftwood mirrors, musical instruments, table decorations and unusual works of art. Some of the students are now planning to link their activities working with the local community with forthcoming enterprise activities next month by selling some of their reuse items. Global Connections are indebted to Chevron, Pembroke, DFID, Russell Commission, and the Social Risk Fund for funding their volunteer projects. And for in kind support of the reuse challenge from FRAME and Pembrokeshire County Council.
