THE Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, and School of Theatre, Trinity College, Carmarthen, are presenting 'The Trial' by Franz Kafka. Adapted by Steven Berkoff, the production will be staged at the Torch on Monday, February 28 and Tuesday, March 1, at 7.30 pm. Directed by Peter Doran and performed by graduating students from the School of Theatre, 'The Trial' is a classic of 20th century literature which is as relevant as ever with its nightmare scenario of a man fighting an enemy without a name who threatens to destroy him. The play takes the audience on a terrifying psychological trip into the life of Josef K., an ordinary man who wakes up one day to find himself accused of a crime he did not commit, a crime whose nature is never revealed to him. Once arrested, he is released, but must report to court on a regular basis - an event that proves maddening, as nothing is ever resolved. As he grows more uncertain of his fate, his personal life - including work at a bank and his relations with his landlady and a young woman who lives next door - becomes increasingly unpredictable. As K. tries to gain control, he succeeds only in accelerating his own excruciating downward spiral. Bizarre, astonishing and funny, from the first moment the play opens, Josef K. is on trial for his right to exist in a play which is infinitely perceptive about the nature of terror - an appropriate theme in today's political climate, in which terror is the enemy against which a war is being raged. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to see the cream of young talent trained in South Wales, performing in this challenging but often funny piece of theatre. Tickets are £8 (£6 concessions) and may be purchased from the Torch Box Office on 01646 695267.
