I was very sad to hear that Sir Benfro Bakery has closed with the loss of 12 jobs because of the economic downturn.

Kevin Reeve, who set-up the Whitland bakery five years ago, says he closed the business before it went bankrupt.

His customers were finding it hard to pay him and, despite trying, he couldn't find enough new business to make ends meet.

He believes he's just the first of many small businessmen who will have to pull the plug.  I'm sure he's right.

Nearly two million people are out of work in the UK now. In South Pembrokeshire, there are already two people chasing every job.

I spent 25 years in business before getting into politics, working my way up from Saturday shop girl to director of an international company. Business is in my blood. It's something I feel passionate about.

As Shadow Regeneration Minister, I am determined to help businesses access the help that the Welsh Assembly Government says is available to them.

I have had a personal assurance from Finance Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones that, via me, he will help Pembrokeshire businesses access help through initiatives such as the Flexible Support Scheme.

The banks have stopped lending money, the European convergence funding we've been promised still hasn't arrived and the pound is struggling.

Small and medium sized businesses, which, of course includes farmers, are the lifeblood of our economy. We must help them survive.
