J. J. Morris report a good entry of 31 grazing cows and overage cattle forward selling to an average of 95.82ppk or the equivalent of £520 per head at a Store sale held at Whitland Mart on Saturday. Cows sold to a top of £860 for a 720 kilo Belgian Blue from Phillips, Lleine. An overage Charolais steer weighing 620 kilos sold at £800 from James, Gilfach.

Store cattle entries numbered 341 and met an excellent trade throughout. All types of cattle of all ages met ready buyers with steers peaking at over £1,000. In response to such a good trade, heifers sold to an average of £530 whilst steers and bulls averaged £624 and £480 respectively. Suckler cows made up to £1,290 for a Hereford from Jones, Horton Nurseries.

An increased entry of ewes and lambs saw prices reaching a top of £96 from Thomas, Syke Farm. In-lamb ewes sold to a top of £71 from Howells, Clubland.

Weekly Mart

At Whitland Mart on Tuesday, February 10, an excellent entry of 1,443 lambs forward saw the best reaching a top of 179ppk and £82.20 per head. The medium types sold to an average price p/kg of 167.65p or to the equivalent of £70.44/head and the overall market average was 162.68p/kg.

The 420 ewes and rams forward again saw the greatest demand being for the stronger type ewes but all sorts met a good trade.

The heavier type ewes sold to an average of £47 whilst the lighter ewes averaged £20 - top of £80 from Thomas, Carregllys. A good entry of rams also saw prices reach a top of £57.50 from Morgan, Upper Bletherston, and ram lambs sold to a top of £47 from Perkins and Co, Dinas Island Farm.

A small entry of barren cows forward selling to an average price p/kg of 92.09p or to the equivalent of £605, a good average considering the fact that there were no continental cattle entered.

In the calf ring, bulls sold to a top price of £132 for a Simmental from Woolley, Pencraig Isaf, and heifers peaked at £120 for a Hereford from Davies, Ty Coed Farm.
