Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire’s Senedd Member has written to the Commissioner for Older People in Wales, urging her support for the establishment of a Banking Hub in South Pembrokeshire following the closure of the final bank branch in Pembroke Dock.
The Member of the Senedd Samuel Kurtz stressed that the withdrawal of in-person banking services has disproportionately affected older residents, many of whom rely on face-to-face support to manage their finances safely and confidently.
“Too many older people are being cut off from essential services as high-street banks disappear,” said Mr Kurtz.
“Access to cash and in-person banking isn’t just convenient — for many older residents, it’s the difference between financial independence and exclusion. The closure of the last bank branch in Pembroke Dock has left a significant gap, and a Banking Hub would help ensure no older person is left behind.”
The proposed Banking Hub would support:
• Older people who rely on traditional banking and struggle with digital-only services
• Residents needing face-to-face financial guidance
• Local businesses, charities, and community organisations that handle cash
• Vulnerable people who depend on accessible services close to home
Samuel Kurtz is calling on local organisations, community groups, businesses, and charities to sign a joint letter backing the creation of the Banking Hub.
“Older people deserve accessible, reliable services in their own communities,” Mr Kurtz added.
“A Banking Hub is not a luxury — it’s a lifeline. With united support from South Pembrokeshire, we can secure the services older residents depend on.”
