Even the bus ride which took the Steps2Health walkers to their destination on Saturday was part of a very enjoyable and interesting outing (writes B.S.).
Fortunately, Silcox had laid on a very large bus as another party of walkers was also on board. As the driver patiently, and with great dexterity, manoevered his way round tortuous narrow country lanes, the passengers were able to view in comfort the panoramas of countryside and coast and admire the well kept gardens of the properties we passed.
On reaching Marros, those wishing to do a five-mile walk to Pendine alighted. But most chose to stay on the bus, with just a few of the hardy accompanying Janice Tooth and Gill Cole on the challenging route.
So the majority, with Val Coates-Rees, alighted at the footpath leading down to Morfa Bay. We were fortunate to have a really native guide in David Cole who, even before we started walking, showed us the smugglers cave well hidden in the undergrowth.
Progressing down the footpath, David further intrigued us by parting the Japanese Knotweed to reveal the ruined remains of the tiny cottage where he had lived up to the age of two. A well had been the sole water supply as late as 58 years ago.
Evelyn, another local, pointed out the Devil's Chair, a rock high on the cliff above the bay and the iron bars laid down on the path for the tanks during the war.
After breathing in the refreshing ozone where the waves lapped the pebble beach, we retraced our footsteps a little way back up the valley and took a wooded footpath which led to the steep hill leading down to Pendine.
It was, indeed, good to be beside the seaside on such a glorious day and sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy refreshments.
It was not that much later that the group who had walked from Marros, joined us, having enjoyed an invigorating walk, and climb, through the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside.
Then time to sit back for an hour and enjoy those fantastic views on the homeward journey.
Tomorrow (Saturday) meet outside Sainsburys 10.30 am for a local walk.
