There was a peaceful invasion at Blackpool Mill on Saturday as Steps2Health walkers descended on this rural beauty spot by cars and minibus (writes B.S.).
A Maytime morning filled with sunshine brought the walkers out in force to enjoy the peace and tranquility that enfolds the upper reaches of the Eastern Cleddau.
No longer a working mill, the old building is still a centre of attraction for all who appreciate the countryside's history.
Warning of muddy conditions, walks leader Barbara Morris advised only those wearing appropriate footwear to follow her on the longer route. But perhaps the majority of walkers opted to follow Margaret Lewis as the path on the opposite bank of the river promised more in the way of spring flowers. We were not disappointed as bluebells, primroses, celandines and wood anenomes lined our path, while birdsong filled the air.
Although we walked a little further than planned, we did not get quite as far as Slebech Hall and the ruined chapel of the Knights Templar, as it was time to retrace our steps to the mill where the perfect weather allowed the walkers to enjoy refreshments while relaxing on the terrace overlooking the river. A grandstand view, indeed, of swooping swallows, while chaffinches bravely came up to the tables in the hope of sharing some cake. They were not disappointed!
This proved to be a delightful outing to start the bank holiday weekend.
Tomorrow (Saturday), meet outside the now closed Somerfield, 10.30 am, for a town walk.
