While other parts of the UK were being battered by high winds and buried in snow, a record number of Steps2Health walkers descended on Pembroke in cars or by mini-bus (writes B.S.). The ancient town must have thought it was a bank holiday as nearly 50 walkers met at the castle car park for the start of Saturday's walk. Perhaps the dry and bright morning persuaded the majority of the group to opt for the longer route led by walks leader Lyn Evans. The remainder were more than happy to follow walks leader Barbara Morris on a shorter route which still took in the spectacular views of the castle, the old town walls and the millpond with its wide variety of swans, mallards and other water fowl. Many friendships have been forged on these weekly walks and, as some newcomers had joined us, it was also good to make new acquaintances. One walker not long resident in the locality and a holidaymaker who was able to give a firsthand account of the unique benefits of being able to enjoy a family holiday here thanks to the Harriet Davis Trust. The hour passed all too quickly, but then it was time for more chatter over refreshments in The Old Cornstore. With such a large party, it was fortunate that some of the hardier souls could sit outside on this early February day. Tomorrow (Saturday), we are back on homeground.
