Last week saw the opening programme of the FAW national girls and women's football week.

Held at Greenhill School Tenby, primary and secondary schools from around Pembrokeshire competed throughout the day to achieve the honour of becoming 'Football Champions of Pembrokeshire'.

The winners of the primary girls section would be progressing to the regional stage of the national girls Cymru challenge six-a-side Welsh schoolgirl competition, the finals of which will be held at a high profile venue.

The standard of play and sporting behaviour throughout was a credit to both the staff and children, and despite indifferent weather spectators and players alike thoroughly enjoyed the day. This was helped in no small part by the high standard of refereeing supplied by pupils from Greenhill school .

Phil Thompson, public relations manager of sponsors Texaco, was delighted with the festival, which also had a secondary school section taking part.

The schools taking part in this were Greenhill, Pembroke and Preseli, with the winners Greenhill finishing undefeated.

Organiser, FAW football development officer Gerry Rigby was also extremely pleased with the response from the schools, with over 150 girls taking part during the day.

The primary schools taking part included Abergwaun, Stepaside, Letterston, Tenby Juniors, Narberth, Holyname, St. Teilo's, Pembroke Dock, Burton, Hakin, Hook, St. Aidan's and St. Mary's.

The overall champions, finishing with a 100 per cent record, was Stepaside School who will therefore represent Pembrokeshire as very worthy winners of the competition.
