Members met on December 2 for the last meeting of this year. Before the meeting started, members stood in silence to remember Mrs. Joan Booker, whose funeral had taken place that morning. Joan had been a faithful member of Mothers' Union for many years and will be sadly missed by all.
In the prayers that followed, members prayed for Mrs. Lyn Tibbett, Mrs. Betty Froggart and Mrs. Christine Sharp, who were in hospital, and for Claire and Jayne. All are wished a speedy recovery.
Following the short service led by Jean, Rev. Michael John was warmly welcomed as guest speaker for the afternoon. His chosen subject was 'Jesus is coming', which was very appropriate at the start of the season of Advent, the beginning of the Christian year.
Michael spoke about time; we humans are inclined to measure time by what we have to do in our daily lives, such as meal times, meetings to attend, jobs to be undertaken, but during Advent we should try to measure time in a new way, how do we do it?
Michael suggested we make extra spiritual time by praying, reading our bibles, meeting God at the Eucharist and sharing fellowship with people we meet. 'Wait and 'watch' are the keys words of Advent. Christians, in order to see Jesus, must watch and wait.
Michael concluded his talk with a prayer which was very apt for this time of year: "Dear God, help us to keep a balance in this season, and not to give in to the pressures of this world, but to remember the many, many people who have so much less in material things. And finally, God, help us to find time in the frantic moments of each day to become centred on you and to remember your incredible love for us."
Jean thanked Michael for his talk. He certainly gave members food for thought.
Dates to note: December 16 - Christmas lunch at Broadmead, 12.30 for 1 pm; January 10 - Festival of Light at Goodwick at 2.30 pm - names to be given to Jean Peen.
Members are also reminded that help is needed tomorrow (Saturday) to make Christingles.
The next meeting is on January 6, at 2.30 pm, in church for a service of Eucharist.
