There was a good attendance at the afternoon meeting of November 4. Enrolling member Jean introduced the guest speaker for the afternoon, Major Clements from the Salvation Army.
Everyone is aware of the unstinting efforts of the Salvation Army. At home they help the homeless find food and shelters and are a prominent presence in war zones and disasters. In the words of Major Clements "they (Salvation Army) see what most people don't."
In his talk, Major Clements spoke on various characters he had met along the way in his work in London and the stories of their lives.
He spoke of Major Birch, who had been commissioned by Major Booth at the age of 17, a selfless woman, who looked after other people throughout her life. He had been influenced by this lady and when she died at the age of 97 he was privileged to conduct her funeral.
The Salvation Army care for families and help them to cope with everyday life in a safe, loving environment; they offer support to people in this busy world where time is a scarce commodity.
Major Clements was thanked for his informative talk and for giving members a greater insight into the work of the Salvation Army. Everyone agreed it had been a most interesting afternoon.
The Christmas lunch will be held at the Broadmead Hotel on December 16. Names to be given in by the next meeting on November 18 at 2.30 pm.
