Members met in Church House on Tuesday, October 21. Enrolling member Jean led the short service from the new Mothers' Union service book.

The speaker for the afternoon needed no introduction as she was one of their own members, Nicole. The title of her talk was 'From register to registrar'. Nicole gave a very interesting and amusing account of her working life.

Having qualified as a teacher, Nicole went to Tanzania with VSO and started her teaching career there, teaching girls who were very enthusiastic and wanted to learn and progress. After two years in Africa, Nicole returned to teaching appointments in Tottenham and Slough. On her return to Pembrokeshire, she taught English and drama at Netherwood School for 15 years.

It was evident from her stories that Nicole thoroughly enjoyed her teaching years as she said she was convinced that she had chosen the right career and wouldn't have wanted to have done anything else.

After retiring from school she started a new phase in her life, that of deputy registrar for birth and deaths and additional registrar for marriages. This was a world away from the classroom, but similar in that she is meeting and working with people. Here she experiences the joy of births and marriages and the sadness of death.

Nicole had a captive audience throughout and it was evident that she had found great satisfaction in her various careers.

Pat thanked Nicole for a fascinating talk and for her dedication as a teacher.

Next meeting is on November 4 at 2.30 pm when guest speakers will be Salvationist friends, Denise and Martin Clements.
