There was a good attendance at the meeting held in Church House on January 16. After a short service, enrolling member Ellen welcomed Mrs. Joan Griffiths, guest speaker for the afternoon.
Mrs. Griffiths talked about Hywel Dda, who ruled during the first half of the 10th century and held his court in Whitland. In the annals of history, he was considered to be a far-seeing man and Wales was united for the first time during his rule. Hywel's laws were written down by the monks and were carried out everywhere, and were also copied by other countries, which was a great step forward for that time.
Now there is an interpretative centre and memorial garden, designed by Peter Lord, in Whitland. These recall and celebrate the achievements of Hywel Dda. Jean Peen warmly thanked Mrs. Griffiths for her most interesting talk.
Members were given programmes listing future speakers and events.
Ellen urged members to please attend the annual general meeting on February 6 at 2.30 pm, as this was an important meeting.
