On the first Sunday after Easter morning, worship was conducted by the Rev. John Potter. An introit was sung by the choir, accompanied by Mr. Alan Adams, and a welcome to worship was read by Rachel Bonsor.
The opening hymn was 'Tell me the stories of Jesus' and after prayers the congregation read Psalm 831, 'A Song of Christ's Glory' which, the Rev. Potter said, is taken from Phillipians chapter 2.
He started his talk to the young people by telling of the encounter between Jesus and two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. This meeting is in eight words which the Rev. Potter split into three groups: 'Jesus Himself', the risen living Lord who is always the same; 'Drew near', Jesus himself drew near as He still does; 'And went with them', He not only went with them, but best of all He still does and can find us anywhere. He shares our life if we will have Him.
Following this, Mrs. Margaret Day read from Luke, chapter 24, verses 44-49, and Acts, chapter 5, verses 27-32.
The congregation sang hymn number 478, 'O Word of God incarnate'.
The Rev. Potter said that his theme for the morning was 'Christ Jesus' from Psalm 831, but he started by talking of the first Palm Sunday when Jesus rode into Jerusalem and some people asked who he was. Peter and other disciples would have been at the heart of the throng and said that He is Jesus the Prophet.
The Rev. Potter split the Psalm into parts. In the first verse, the word that reads in our text as 'form' had a very different meaning in Greek, which is the language Paul wrote. It meant 'the essence, the innermost person'. Verse one says that Jesus was the divinity of God and the second verse the humanity. The third verse speaks of him humbling himself and the fourth verse of His exaltation by God.
Christ Jesus was in being before the words were made. He was not born at Bethlehem, but came down from heaven. There are many references to this in the Bible, including John, chapter 1, 'In the beginning the Word already existed'. The Lord the King of glory is here with us today.
The blessing was said by all and the choir sang the Grace.
Many thanks go to the Rev. Potter and to all others who took part in the service.
Worship on Sunday will be at 11 am and will be conducted by the Mission Aviation Fellowship. All are welcome.
