Worship on Sunday was led by the Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head. On a bright autumn morning, the family of St. Johns celebrated their Harvest Festival. The introit, 'As we are gathered, Jesus is here' was sung by the choir accompanied by Sheila John, after which Molly read the words of the young people's welcome.
"As we look around at the many gifts of creation this day, may we enjoy all the gifts that are given to us by God."
The sanctuary had been beautifully decorated for the occasion by Mrs. Ann Maggs and Mrs. Sonia Hurlow, with harvest produce kindly donated by members.
"As we celebrate God's love, may the joy of his presence be with us today," were Nanette's opening words followed by the hymn 'Come ye thankful people come, Raise the song of Harvest home!'
It was then time for the young people to take centre stage. For the past few weeks they had been busy making a collage in preparation for Harvest depicting the 'Fruits of the Spirit'. On Sunday they were able to show off their work, the fruits on their collage representing, love, joy, kindness, self control, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, goodness and peace.
In answer to the question, "What do the 'fruits of the spirit' need to grow?" Steffan, Robert, Rachel, Isobel, William and Thomas recited prayers of creation and thanksgiving. "Thank you God for the seed of love within each of us. Thank you for the Holy Spirit which encourages us in our growth." Their eager voices were an inspiration to all.
Mrs. Sheila Noot read from Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22-25, and Lara from Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verses 1-14.
A 'Christian Aid' documentary depicting life in the 'Developing World' was shown by Mrs. Janet Drogan. So often we forget those less fortunate than ourselves, let us at this time of harvest reflect on the needs of others. May we give freely sharing their sorrow when crops fail, their determined vision for change and their joy when they harvest. "In the help we give our neighbour, God's will is done."
A prayer for Harvest was then read by Mrs. Sonia Hurlow.
In her address, Nanette spoke of God's faithfulness and grace to each of us. "The joy of harvest time starts today," she affirmed, "as we reap the rewards of God's love."
The sacrament of Holy Communion was shared.
The harvest hymn, 'We plough the fields and scatter', and the blessing concluded a joyous morning's worship.
Thanks go to Nanette for her guidance as we journey in faith and to all those who contributed so generously in the sharing of God's gifts.
Finally, a 'faith lunch' was shared.
This Sunday, worship will be at 11 am and will be led by the Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head. All are welcome.
