Worship was led on Sunday by St. Johns own minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis Head. She thanked Connor Bridge for reading the words of welcome. During the service, Connor and Donald were congratulated on their birthdays and thanked by Nanette for their part in the life of the church.
In this busy summer period, many holidaymakers were welcomed to worship and Zoe, granddaughter of Mrs. Brenda Harris, was warmly welcomed by Nanette on another of her return visits.
As an introduction to the theme for worshipping, 'The power of God's love', Nanette spoke to the children about the many kinds and sources of power, natural sources such as water, wind and sun. She said that power in people's hands could be used in an evil way or a good way, but that the greatest power of all is that of God's love.
The congregational reading was Psalm 96, 'O sing to the Lord a new song' and two further passages of scripture were read by Mrs. Janet Drogan - John 6 1-21, 'Jesus feeds five thousand', and Ephesians 3 14-21, 'The Love of Christ'.
In summing up, what was an inspiring sermon, Nanette took the words from Ephesians 3 to continue this study of this epistle. We need to be reminded of the power of God's love; a power which has enabled many, apparently weak people, to do wonderful things.
It is not enough to say that we welcome Jesus into our lives and hearts; the challenge of the scripture is that we share our faith, as Christians, with others. God's power of love is for the world. God sent his only son to bring us life through the sacrifice of the cross. God's love is high, wonderful and deep. May we come to know it.
The message of the sermon was affirmed in the hymn 'God is love, let heaven adore him, God is love, let earth rejoice'.
Thank you, Nanette, for guiding us in this study, to Connor and Janet for reading, to Mrs. Sheila Noot, who played the organ, and to the singing group - all contributions enriched the worship.
Nanette will lead this Sunday at 10.30 am, when worship will include the celebration of Holy Communion.
All are welcome.
