St. Florence VC School recently had a good response from its Estyn Inspection Report which took place in March. Chair of governors Mr. Keith Nixon said: "The full report reflects the hard-work and commitment shown not only by the staff, but the children, parents and governing body of this excellent school. "The inspectors were extremely impressed by the high standards achieved throughout the curriculum and we are justifiably proud of their observations and commendations," he continued. Extracts from the report read as follows: • The outstanding relationships between staff and pupils contribute significantly to the good standards achieved and the quality of life in the school. Each member of the school community feels valued and respected and the school has a warm, caring ethos. • Pupils standards in the lessons observed are significantly higher than the target of the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) for the whole of Wales for 2010. Pupils have positive attitudes towards learning and they enjoy their lessons. Their very good behaviour is an outstanding feature of the school and contributes significantly to the standards pupils achieve and to the quality of life in the school. • Good features, which are common to all the teaching, include the use of innovative and imaginative strategies, consistent emphasis on the importance of independence in learning, lessons which progress at a good pace, sensitive intervention to support and encourage pupils in their work and well planned lessons which have a clear structure and purpose. All lessons observed were judged to be either outstanding or good. • The school is well-led and the headteacher gives positive direction and purpose. He has a clear vision which is set in the context of Christian values and this is shared by the staff. The school makes good provision for promoting pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. • Collective worship contributes significantly to pupils' spiritual development and there are good opportunities for developing pupils social skills through learning activities which promote effective co-operation within group and paired activities. Class discussion time and dedicated PSE sessions make an important contribution to pupils' social and moral development.
