Manorbier United travelled to Fishguard Sports on Saturday for a bottom-of-the-table clash, which saw them hit the Sports for six!

A slightly rearranged team saw some excellent performances from several Manorbier players, notably local young gun John Squire at left back and David Blackwell in the centre of midfield.

The first half started slowly for Manorbier as Fishguard pressed forward, but several Sports opportunities led to no real pressure on the Manorbier goal.

Once Manorbier got into their stride things started to happen, and just before half-time Mark Schuster had a goal disallowed and one effort clatter the crossbar.

Manorbier did get a late goal to make it 1-0 at half-time and the team talk at the break consisted of 'more of the same and the goals will keep coming'.

Playing down the Fishguard slope in the second half, Manorbier found their long-awaited form. They played 'on the floor football' in difficult conditions.

Within the space of 25 minutes they had hit five past a jaded Fishguard outfit, goals that would grace any football field in the county. Two from Gavin Evans, two from Jamie Bradfield and a 25-yard thunderbolt from David Blackwell stunned the large crowd. It was a demolition job.

The game was in Manorbier's control, with the defence of skipper Marv Protheroe, Deano Hamilton, Sam Ormond and John Squire keeping a tight ship throughout, although Fishguard did manage to pull one back with 10 minutes to go.

The goal of the game came just before the end when, following a series of excellent one-touch passes from the defence, David Blackwell cut through the midfield to put James Hall away. He danced and weaved through the defence to slot the ball under the diving goalkeeper - and that made it six.

So an emphatic win for Manorbier, and a worthwhile journey.

Coach Robbie Thomas said after the game: "It was nice to see it all coming together. The boys played well and showed a positive attitude throughout; the finishing was first class."

Manorbier United host Narberth tomorrow (Saturday), with a 2.30 pm kick-off.
