Narberth's World and Welsh boxing referee, John Phillips begins his 30th season for the Welsh ABA and his 25 season as an International referee.

It was way back in 1979 that John started his incredible run of International duty for Wales when he refereed the England versus Wales match at Hastings in Sussex.

In the next five weeks, he has been told he is officiating at two Internationals.

On Saturday, he referees at the England and Wales match at Bristol, and on November 15, at the Penrheol Leisure Centre, he will be refereeing the Wales versus Norway International.

This is John's incredible 90th International at all levels and another two or three years will see him break the 100 barrier. This is on top of his European, World, Commonwealth and multi-nation tournaments and 18 Welsh senior finals he has officiated at.

At the moment, John is busy compiling the records of everyone who has won a British title at every weight in the last 100 years or so. A mammoth task which to his knowledge has never been done, but he hopes to complete it next year.

John is a boxing historian and compiler of boxing professional records.

He has a library of books, photos, programmes Boxing News weekly 'papers and hundreds of well-known magazines.

Being Olympic year next year, John hopes to qualify to go to the Olympics in Greece. He refereed the qualifying Olympic tournament in 2000, but didn't make it, so hopes to go one better this time.

With the dozens of club shows and championships around Wales, he will be kept busy this season.

Narberth certainly has a sporting ambassador in John.
