To coincide with the start of the new school year, Specsavers Opticians in Pembroke Dock is urging teachers to keep an eye out for hard working pupils as they launch the hunt to find 'Spectacular Pupil of the Year 2006'.
The award scheme has the aim of rewarding pupils who make remarkable progress throughout this school year, not just academically, but with efforts in all areas of school life. The award scheme also highlights the importance of good eyesight amongst children and regular eye tests, an important aspect of the back to school routine which shouldn't be overlooked.
Gary Owen, store director at Specsavers Opticians in Pembroke Dock, said: "Good eyesight is one of the most important tools in a child's learning and if not in perfect condition can often be mistaken for learning difficulties in young children.
"It's really important that children's eyesight is checked regularly from a young age because much of its development takes place before the age of eight - after eight really is too late as by then it can be much harder to correct any problems.
"Vision problems can have a massive impact on a child's ability to learn therefore to ensure they get the best out of school an eye test should be a crucial part of the whole back to school routine." Teachers interested in the 'Spectacular Pupil of the Year 2006' award should contact Lyndsey Jenkins on 02920 545370 for more information.
