A walkway leading down to Tenby's South Beach is due to be re-opened ahead of the weekend after councillors raised concerns over the safety of a temporary ramp.

Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Lawrence Blackhall said that he wished to reiterate his concerns about the effect that the development taking place on the South Beach was having on that area.

"I've got serious concerns about the ramp that is in place there leading down to the beach; the developers said that they would have the walkway reopened by now, so it's not ideal going into another holiday period and very disappointing," he told his colleagues.

Clr. Blackhall was also concerned that rubble and debris from the development, which involves luxury apartments being built on the site of the former Fountains Cafe, was still appearing on the sands.

"The ramp doesn't appear very safe at all, especially in strong winds. There were youngsters hanging off it the other day; it's a disaster waiting to happen as it is," remarked Clr. David Morgan.

Clr. Mike Evans said that he had recently met with the foreman on the site who had given assurances that their target was still to have the walkways open by Friday evening.

"Unfortunately they've had several delays to the work on the walkway as problems with the foundations have cropped up, but what is going to be there is very impressive and hopefully it will be ready by the weekend," he explained.

The town clerk also told members that the historic beacon on the South Beach was being temporarily taken away and kept in storage until it could be relocated in the area after the work had progressed.
