The night of Friday, September 9, saw the start of a weekend of celebration for SI Tenby and District to mark their 50th charter year.
The first event was a Golden Jubilee Dinner at the St. Bride's Hotel, Saundersfoot, where they were joined by the chairman of Saundersfoot Community Council, Clr. Don Poole accompanied by his wife Pat, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter, the Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, the Federation president of SI Great Britain and Ireland, Mrs. Janet Garnons-Williams with her husband Chris and the regional president of Wales South, Mrs. Helen Nicholls.
The club were also delighted to welcome members from their link clubs in Belgium (SI Charlroi), France (Paris-Vincennes) and Cheltenham, their Mother Club, SI Carmarthen, their Daughter Club, SI Pembroke, clubs from across the Wales South region and many club presidents. In all, a grand total of 96 gathered for the evening.
The dining room looked wonderful with balloons by Floatations and floral arrangements by immediate past president of Tenby, Mrs. Jan Griffiths. A stand of 50 golden candles and a celebration cake made by club treasurer, Mrs. Marilyn Phillips, and decorated by Mr. Donald John was centre stage. The latter provided the highlight of the evening. Founder member Mrs. Margaret Hughes was invited to cut the cake and then a candle was lit for every past president by club president Rosemary and Margaret.
During the 'quiet' periods, the diners were entertained by a very talented young harpist, and a daughter of a Tenby member, Miss Alexandra Powell, and the evening was kept running smoothly by toastmaster Mrs. Wendy Bell and president-elect Mrs. Sonia Evans.
Bringing the dinner to a close, president Rosemary thanked Mr. Andrew Evans and his staff for all their help, her fellow club members for the hard work they had put in to make the evening a success, Alexandra for her delightful playing, and expressed her sincere thanks to all her top table guests, the link clubs, all the visiting presidents and clubs for supporting Tenby on their special night.
On Saturday morning, Mr. Don Poole and his wife hosted a reception at the Cambrian Hotel, Saundersfoot, which gave all the visitors a chance to chat together. That evening everyone gathered at the Regency Hall to enjoy a Welsh 'Twmpath'. The music and dancing was supplied by the Glancleddau Dancers, led by Rob and Pat Rye, who apart from delighting with their performances soon had everyone on the floor. Much fun and laughter followed. To add to the enjoyment of the evening, the talented young dancers from the Hynes Irish Dance School gave a superb display and were much admired by their audience.
At the end of night, president Rosemary expressed her thanks to all the entertainers and was delighted to announce that the raffle had raised £136 for the Noah's Ark Appeal, her chosen charity.
On Sunday morning, club members and visitors attended the morning service at St. Issell's Church, Saundersfoot, followed by coffee in the School Room. To round the weekend off, there was a Sunday lunch at the Mermaid Restaurant.
