Calls for the traffic chaos in Whitland to be sorted out once and for all have been made this week by the town's Mayor. Mayor, Clr. Con Harries, believes that a car park is urgently required to cater for the increased volume of traffic coming into the growing town. He also denied a report that town councillors would act as traffic wardens if Carmarthen County Council did not send wardens to prosecute offenders. "This statement in a local newspaper has been wrongly printed; the suggestion that town councillors will act as traffic wardens is completely untrue," he commented. "What is required in Whitland is car park facilities to resolve the traffic problems once and for all. "Carmarthen traffic officer Yvonne Mclavy tells everybody to telephone Carmarthen council on 0845 658 0445 when a traffic warden is required, but everyone who rings this number gets no reply," continued Clr. Harries "Also, the town council was told by county councillor Jimmy Morgan that if we required white lines to mark the spaces at our present very small car park, it is in all possibility that the facility will have to be paid for parking. "What are we in Whitland paying community tax for if the county council contemplates charging for every amenity we request," he added.
Lane 'deplorable'
Condition of a lane leading to Whitland's Grosvenor House has been described as 'deplorable' by the town's Mayor. Mayor, Clr. Con Harries is concerned by the deteriorating state of the lane where a local lady had fallen during the past few days, suffering a serious leg fracture. "The property is owned by county council and it's high time that they took responsibilty in making sure the lane's surface is improved, as it's full of ruts and a definite safety hazard to anyone who walks on it," remarked Clr. Harries.
