After competing in the West Wales Cup last weekend, Pembrokeshire teams took the first steps towards an appearance at the Bridge Meadow as the first round of the Senior Cup took place.

There were few shocks on offer, apart from the fact last year's champions Hakin United were dumped out at the first hurdle after losing 4-3 against Second Division Hundleton. Other than that, results pretty much went with the grain.

Had St. Clears not travelled to Herbrandston with six players out through various commitments, they too could have joined the realms of the shock-makers after they pushed Herbrandston very close, despite losing 2-0.

It's not often managers are upbeat following a defeat, but Saints' boss Charlie Smith had nothing but praise for his charges.

"I'm disappointed, but I thought we were the better side. We could have gone two up in the first half and put them out of sight, but we missed those chances and they came back. In the end, I guess they were a little too streetwise."

The chances he spoke of were the result of Nathan Evans and Eddie Wiggins both hitting the woodwork after one-on-ones with the home team 'keeper. Had they gone in, the visitors would have gone into the break two goals up; as it happens, the teams were locked 0-0.

For all of the visitors' endeavours, they finally gave in to the First Division outfit through two defensive errors that resulted in goals. This gave the Saints too much to do and they were unable to come back. Had they played with a full strength side, it could have been all so different.

Kilgetty were anther team to play in the Milford area after they travelled to Hubberston. Unlike St. Clears, they were able to play with a full side and this resulted in a 4-1 win, although manager Norman James admitted it was tighter than the scoreline suggests.

"It was a good win, but we struggled at times. They made it very difficult for us and caused us plenty of problems. It was a tight game, but we had Mike Beynon on top form and he was the difference."

Beynon scored all of the visitors' goals, one in the first half and the others at regular 10-minute intervals in the second.

James's team were lucky he was in such fine form after the teams were locked 1-1 at the break, but Kilgetty finally broke clear in the second thanks to Beynon's class.

Lawrenny boss Neil Jolly was full of smiles, despite witnessing his team lose 2-1 at home against Haverfordwest County; the defeat coming through a late goal by the visitors.

Such was the home team's display, they took the lead after 15 minutes when Chris Beff and Joe Kidney played a one-two up the field, with Beff slotting the ball home, although the Bluebirds equalised soon after.

Jolly's men maintained their discipline and shape in the second half and continued to frustrate the visitors and, but for a late winner, the game could have gone into extra-time, a fact that Jolly acknowledged.

"We didn't anticipate progressing, but we played really well and but for a bit of misfortune we could have gone into extra-time. We honestly thought they would be too good for us, but we kept at it throughout the game and our first half performance was especially good."

Pendine didn't have such a good day, though, after they were trounced 7-1 at home against a rampant Tenby team intent on showing the county what they are capable of. Such was their dominance that they led 5-0 at half-time, with Paul Langdon's consolation coming after the Seasiders had whacked in their sixth.

Sixteen-year-old Jordan Richards was the stand-out player as his hat-trick got the ball rolling for the Seasiders, with Ben Goldsmith grabbing a well-earned brace as Dean Rossiter and Alex Harvey grabbed one apiece.

Visiting boss Mike Lewis had nothing but praise for his team.

"It was a good win. Pendine is never an easy place to play, but we played some good football against a team that never gave in."

Narberth were another team intent on showing their form as they travelled to Saundersfoot and won 8-0.

The result wasn't so much of a shock, but the scoreline definitely was, although Bluebirds boss Nigel Thomas believes they had a few players missing.

"I think they had some regulars out, but that shouldn't detract from our performance which was superb."

Narberth led 3-0 at the break with goals from Richie Adams, Ashley Williams and Tony Evans.

Evans added another in the second half, with further goals coming from Justin Blewitt, Morgan Preece and a Jordan Williams brace.

Away from cup action, Narberth Seconds continued their fine goal-scoring form of late as they put three past Monkton Swifts' reserves at Jesse Road. Unfortunately, the visitors managed the same and the teams had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

The fact Narberth managed three was a good effort, given the physicality of the opposition, although the game was a tight affair throughout.

Adrian Howells and Steve Williamson scored in the first half to cancel out goals from the opposition, while in the second, substitute Tom Richards put the home team ahead, only for this to be negated by a late score by the visitors.

Manorbier haven't had the best of times lately, but they gave a good account of themselves away at Solva, despite losing 5-4.

Paul Maytum scored two of the visiting goals, with Mike Ryder continuing his fine form with yet another as James Hall scored their fourth.

In Division Four, a Lee Watkins score secured a draw for Carew Seconds against their counterparts from Camrose, while Saundersfoot Sports lost 5-2 away at Prendergast Villa.

St. Florence scored three at home against Clarbeston Road's reserves - James Nicholas with two and Barry Wolverson with the other - but conceded seven in the process, while Tenby Seconds could only manage a 3-3 draw away at St. Ishmaels.

Tom Nicholas was at it again as he scored twice for the Seasiders' second string and Sam Christopher nabbed the third.

Kilgetty Seconds were in fine goal-scoring form in Division Five after they put five past Haverfordwest Cricket Club in their 5-3 victory, while a weakened St. Clears could only manage to score two goals at home against Fishguard Sports, who scored seven of their own.
