An experienced Whitland team were too strong on the day against a plucky Llangwm team and coasted to an eight wickets win over Llangwm in Sunday's final at Carew to win the Ormond Youth Cup (sponsored by Tony Pidgeon) for the second time in their history. After losing out to Llanrhian in last season's final, Edward John and his team drew on that experience and Whitland established a decisive lead of 34 runs in the first innings of 20 overs, after scoring 109 for 1 in reply to Llangwm's total of 75 for 7. Although middle order batsman Luke Brock scored 33 and Bill Brant 10, the Llangwm batsmen found it difficult to maintain the run rate without losing wickets after Robert Merriman and Owen Edwards had made the early breakthrough for Whitland. Brock and Brant added 41 for the sixth wicket for Llangwm, but there were no other significant partnerships as Robert Merriman took 2 for 11, Nick Davies 2 for 22, with other wickets falling to Owen Edwards, Edward John and Jonathan Davies. When Whitland responded, skipper Edward John had an outstanding innings of 63 not out at a run a ball, supported by Nick Davies in an opening partnership of 64. When Nick Davies was bowled by Andrew Brock for 29, Jonathan Davies helped John add 45 vital runs in an unbroken second wicket stand. Llangwm found it difficult to score runs in the second innings quickly enough to wipe out the deficit in time to set Whitland a challenging target. The Llangwm innings closed on a total of 79 for 7, with Stephen Inward 27 not out and skipper Chris Inward scoring 24 before being trapped leg before wicket by spinner Nick Davies. Nick Davies took 3 for 27 for Whitland, paceman Robert Merriman 2 for 6 and Owen Edwards 1 for 16. Needing 46 to win, Whitland scored 46 for 2, with Edward John leading the way again with 33 not out, including a six and three 4s, supported by Owen Edwards in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 29 to take the cup back to Hendy Gwyn. Chris Inward and Andrew Brock were the wicket-takers for Llangwm. It came as little surprise when the Whitland skipper, Edward John, was awarded the Hugh Phillips man-of-the-match trophy by adjudicator Adrian Griffiths.
