A LEGENDARY figure from the pages of Pembrokeshire and British history will be centre stage among Carew Castle visitors over the May holiday weekend.

Sir Rhys ap Thomas will again be 'lord of the manor' during a living history interpretation of Tudor times staged by re-enactment group Heathcliffe Heroics. The group, which appears at venues all over the country, is led by Heath Pye, a regular performer at Carew.

Entitled 'The Bow, the Blade and the Bard', the re-enactment will include archery, swordplay and drama. Sir Rhys ap Thomas himself has a special place in history as his support for the young Henry Tudor, who was born at Pembroke Castle, helped Henry win the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and with it the Crown of England.

Visitors to the castle will be invited into Sir Rhys's colourful household and will be able to look in on life in a medieval fortress. They will also be able to try their hand at archery.

The group will be 'resident' during the weekend in a period encampment with authentic costume, food preparation and weapons. Performances will be held between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 4, 5 and 6.

Normal admission charges apply each day and further information is available from the castle on (01646) 651782.
