Tenby scooped a Silver Gilt in the 'Coastal Up to 12k category' at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom National Awards for 2012, held last weekend.

Matt Baker, presenter of BBC TV's The One Show, hosted the prestigious RHS Britain in Bloom Award Ceremony held in St Peter Port, Guernsey, and attended by 450 community gardening champions.

RHS Judge, Sue Wood, said: "This beautiful floral town surrounded by an imposing stone wall dating back to the 13th century, is steeped in ancient history.

"The town was buzzing with holidaymakers, who made our visit even more rewarding. The pleasure these people were getting from this attractive seaside town with its floral displays, attractive shops and heritage was clear to see.

"The warm welcome we received and the enthusiasm during the tour by Sue Lane, chairman of Tenby in Bloom, and (town council) clerk Andrew Davies was very much appreciated.

"It is clear that Tenby recognises the importance of Bloom and the effect it has on their local economy. It was noted that finance has a great part to play in competing in this campaign and any reductions in income would have an overall effect on the Town.

"Involvement in Tenby in Bloom starts at an early age with links in all the schools, giving the young people an insight into maintaining their local community, a bonus for years to come," she added.

Lytham and North Berwick in Scotland, were the gold and joint winners in Tenby's category.

More than 1,200 UK communities, from big cities to wee villages, participate each year in the RHS campaign to green-up and clean-up Britain.

Of these, just 72 finalists were chosen to represent their region/nation in the UK finals, with Tenby representing Wales.

Broughshane, in Northern Ireland, was awarded the ultimate community gardening prize, winning the 'Champion of Champions 2012' award, meaning the town is arguably the cleanest, greenest and most beautiful location in Britain.

"Congratulations must go to Pembrokeshire County Council's gardening team, as well as Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane and everyone involved with Tenby In Bloom, they have all worked very hard," said Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Trevor Hallett.
