Sir, I had the pleasure today of 'rescuing' a manx shearwater. Not that I had to do very much - a neighbour left it outside my back door in a box and phoned me on his way to work to say he'd found a little 'duck' on his drive last night and thought I would know what to do with it! Thanks to the publicity in your newspaper, I knew exactly what this 'duck' was and who to contact. A quick phone call (01646 651236) and a drive over to the Oiled Birds Rescue Centre soon saw the young shearwater in the capable and caring hands of Jean Hains. Hopefully, my little charge (in the attached photo), together with all the other shearwaters at the centre, will soon be winging his way to Southern Portugal. Thanks to people like Jean, many of our birds are saved from danger or death. Looking after and treating the birds can be costly, so if anyone, like me, wishes to make a donation, I'm sure Jean would be extremely grateful. Thank you, Jean - and all your hard-working volunteers! Sue Davies, Grumble Bush, St. Florence.
