The Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has been taking a lesson from Narberth CP School. David Lidington MP was in Pembrokeshire to learn more about bilingual teaching in Welsh schools. The Government is looking at introducing an Irish Language Bill, so Mr. Lidington visited Narberth to see how Welsh and English are taught side-by-side. The school has a popular Welsh medium stream and the playground and corridors are bi-lingual. "I am keen to understand more about the place of the Welsh language in national life," said Mr. Lidington. "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the school and was impressed by what I saw there. "It was clear that Narberth School valued both English and Welsh and that a growing number of English-speaking parents had chosen to have their children educated through the medium of Welsh." Angela Burns, assembly candidate for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, said: "We heard at Narberth School that it's vital for children to hear and speak Welsh before they are five if they are to absorb a new language easily. But there is a shortage of teachers able to teach in Welsh. "The Labour-led Assembly must ensure that the resources and encouragement is available to provide for this growing demand from parents for Welsh-medium education. "The Welsh Conservatives are committed to preserving and encouraging the use of Welsh."
