Tenby United travelled to play Mumbles in a division four west clash on Saturday and suffered a narrow defeat in a game that could have gone either way.
Tenby have been in good form of late, having seen off division three west high flyers Cardigan in the Pembrokeshire KO Cup and league strugglers Tumble in recent games, but, unlike the weekend weather, some of their shine was missing in what was to prove a hard-working but lacklustre display.
Indeed, the game panned out in an inconsistent and sometimes scrappy manner, with neither side showing any promising forward momentum or cutting edge behind.
The only try of the game resulted from a handling error by the United on the halfway line. The loss of possession came about from more of a fumble than an interception, but credit to Mumbles, they capitalised on the mistake as alert flanker Keith Rogers charged over for the touchdown.
The try was converted and Mumbles also added a penalty goal to give them the upper hand and highlight Tenby's weaknesses on their travels away from Heywood Lane.
The Seasiders, lying comfortably in mid-table, have league security for the first time in a number of seasons, and this, linked with the prospect of a forthcoming cup final, may have taken some of the focus away from the players, but this blip doesn't take away from the United what, overall, has been a progressive season for them.
Indeed, it was by no means a comfortable victory for Mumbles and the resilience of the Tenby backs must be something the coaching staff can take solace from.
