Sir,

For well over 200 years, The Royal Marines have had a close association with Wales and especially Pembrokeshire. One of the original regimental commanders was the eighth Earl of Pembroke.

History shows that the Corps’ presence was truly established with the creation of the new Naval Dockyard at Paterchurch, Pembroke, in 1814.

The link with Pembrokeshire has been almost continuous in the many forms that the Corps has since evolved. Providing HM Ships Detachments for landing and raiding parties, amphibious units and during WW2 and later the training of Britain’s Commando Forces. Although all forms of Corps training have now been centralised, Royal Marines still suffer the rigours of Castlemartin along with the south, mid and north Wales’ training areas.

Many of our predecessors serving in Pembrokeshire met and married Pembrokeshire ladies and after the war settled in the area, eventually forming the Saundersfoot branch of the Royal Marines Association. The branch thrived for many years until time caught up with the members, yes even Old Father Time does not ignore Royal Marines. Who else would St. Peter trust to guard the Pearly Gates?

Unfortunately, the Saundersfoot branch became depleted and down to just a few active members who themselves became less active. The result being that the Branch Standard is unfortunately missing. The Swansea Bay Branch of the Royal Marines Association is now the only active and may I say vibrant branch in south Wales. We are asking the help of the people of Pembrokeshire and especially the Tenby, Manorbier and Saundersfoot area to help us trace the Standard so that it can be placed in an appropriate place of public worship where our predecessors can be recognised and their contribution to the well-being of our country acknowledged.

If there is anyone who can help us in our quest, please contact me by email at [email protected] or inform the staff at the Royal Marines Central Office at 023 9265 1519 and ask that they pass on useful information to me.
