As we were going to press yesterday (Thursday) morning, HM Coastguard confirmed that the search for a swimmer missing in the sea off one of South Pembrokeshire's most popular beaches had been suspended. Tenby coastguard rescue team conducted a low water search for the 24-year-old man who got into difficulties off South Beach at Wednesday lunchtime on foot at approximately 6.45 am yesterday, but it produced a negative result. "All search and rescue operations have now been suspended unless further information comes to light," said Angie Smith, district public relations officer at Milford Haven Coastguard. Originally from South Wales, the man, staying locally in a bed and breakfast, was seen by his colleague and several other members of the public to enter the sea wearing just a pair of shorts. His intention was to swim to a buoy some way off- shore and return, a swim he had completed successfully the day before. While his swim on Wednesday started off with no incident, approximately 150 metres out, he was seen to turn onto his back and wave one arm in the air. Witnesses horrifyingly then watched as he disappeared below the surface. Numerous '999' calls were received at the Operations Room at Milford Haven Coastguard from members of the public and immediately a full air, land and sea search was sparked. Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team and the South Pembs. sector manager, Mr. Dave Miller, the resort's RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats, a rescue helicopter R169 from Chivenor and Dyfed Powys Police were on scene within a couple of minutes and began carrying out extensive searches of the area, but sadly, no trace of the swimmer was found. Added Mrs. Smith: "The weather on Tuesday was benign for a swim, but on Wednesday, the sea was rough with white horses, the wind was south- westerly 6-7 and the temperature much cooler, not conducive for swimming." Dyfed Powys Police are now dealing with this incident.
